The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Paperback, 384 pages
Scholastic
July 2010

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning?

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before--and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weight survival against humanity and life against love.

This book had me from the first page to the last. I liked that it didn't just jump into the reaping or the Games instead it gave us a little history. I think what Katniss did was very brave. If I was in her place I don't know if I could have done the same knowing that there is a good chance I would not come back. Gale gave me the sense of a big brother out there to protect Katniss and her family. Now, he wasn't in the book for a great deal of it but that is what I perceived him as so far. Peeta now I absolutely love him. I wasn't like Katniss in the beginning of the Games I actually saw through what he doing and knew he was doing it for her safety.

Even though Katniss was against everyone else in there, their game tatics make you think "if you were to have to be in that arena and fight to the death what would you do to stay alive?" I am particularly fond that Haymitch told Katniss and Peeta not to reveal their strengths to everyone beforehand. I thought it was very smart. Well I can't go on without giving spoilers.

I absolutely can not wait to go and get Catching Fire and MockingJay to read and finish the series.

  2. I'm reading this right now (because my husband has been begging me to for months) and so far, I really like it. I agree with you, I like the history between the reaping and the Games. I usually don't like long back stories, but I think if it's about something that you're interested in or are confused about, it's good!

  3. The Hunger Games is by far the best first book of a series ever. It was just totally mind blowing. Great review.
